The Buffalo Logic Colloquium (BLC) is an interdisciplinary logic group whose members include professors and graduate students from several institutions in Western New York and nearby Southwestern Ontario. Institutions represented include University at Buffalo, SUC at Buffalo, Canisius College, Erie Community College, DYouville College, Roswell Park Cancer Center, Woodward-Hauptman Institute, SUNY at Fredonia, McMaster University, University of Waterloo and University of Western Ontario.
Invitation Guidelines:
The BLC usually meets on Wednesdays. In the summer, the meetings are at noon, the last week in June, all four weeks of July, and occasionally in August. In the fall, we usually leave September open and start meeting in October at two-week intervals at 4 PM. But, we are flexible about date, day and time.
Prospective speakers should send a title and abstract. Speakers are asked to structure their talks to be accessible to a broad audience, to be largely expository, and to avoid trying to conclusively prove anything. Make the first 15 minutes as elementary as possible. Also, try to be sensitive to what people need to be instructed in to see the point of your message. Lecture unto others as you would have them lecture unto you when you were not up to speed on the topic. The more open you are to interruptions for comments and clarifications the better, but you can set your own rules. Presentations are 45 minutes long. Please make sure in advance that your presentation can be completed without rushing in that time. Several members are not native speakers of English, so please speak slowly and clearly, and avoid unusual words or constructions.
Once a date has been set, the custom is for the speaker to send as early as convenient a polished 100-200 word abstract to be put on the website, emailed to the membership list and posted to the FOM List as plain text.
Under certain circumstances a very modest honorarium will be available mainly to cover your expenses. Anyone who can get home institution funding is urged to do so. We will do our best to meet your needs.
